ONWARD Compé '13 Finalist, Philadelphia, USA
International Competition . Juried Exhibition . Photography Festival/Summit
ONWARD Compé is an international photography competition for emerging photographers. The exhibition of selected photographers’ images culminates in the ONWARD Summit, an annual photography festival held in Philadelphia.
Juried each year by a leading figure in contemporary photography, ONWARD Compé spotlights new, envelope-pushing work that continues to further the medium. Now in its sixth year, Compé has solidified its standing as a highly respected international competition, drawing submissions from across the U.S. and around the globe. The competition seeks to increase the exposure of talented image-makers, create outlets for artists’ work, and present compelling photographs in a cohesive and well-curated exhibition.
Compé and Summit are two prongs of ONWARD, a multifaceted photography happening that encompasses a photography festival in Philadelphia, an international competition, Galerie, an online gallery featuring selected photographers, and Workshops for discerning photographers.
2013 edition's guest juror is celebrated photographer Mark Steinmetz. Primarily working in black and white, Steinmetz is renowned for his modest yet powerful photographs, characterized by a lyrical quality of light and a sense of reverence for the everyday. A sense of precision and care is present in the nuanced beauty of his self-pulled prints, and, in the tradition of classic street photography, his subjects are encountered, rather than sought.
Steinmetz has published several books with Nazraeli Press, including South Central, South East, Greater Atlanta, and Summertime. His latest book, called Paris in my Time is due out in early 2013.
His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and among others.
He is a Guggenheim Fellow, and he has taught at Yale University, Harvard University, Emory University, Sarah Lawrence College, and the University of Hartford Photography MFA program.
Born in Manhattan to a French mother and a Dutch father, Steinmetz currently resides in Athens, Georgia.
Project Basho houses a gallery dedicated to the medium of photography. The space is among the few in Philadelphia that exclusively features photography. "Unique architectural details create a spacious and intimate gallery, where visually arresting photographs and educated viewers meet to celebrate the beauty, craft and vision of the medium."
