11. Märcall: Athens Digital Art Festival >>Call for entries extennded : 18 March 2015 Call For Artists, Athens Digital Arts Festival Public Space_s Athens Digital Arts Festival invites you to submit proposals for its next edition taking place in spring in Athens. for submissions is 4 March 2015. In our times, the notion of public space appears to be one of the most contradictory concepts. With the rise of network and communication technologies, our experience of public space has changed. Public space is not only characterised by physical space and architecture but also by networks and knowledge distribution. While public space is mainly being interpreted through urban planning, digital public space is organised through IP locations, URLs and protocols. Their cartographies, as distinct as they may seem, are both informed by network dynamics that add new layers of interpretation. Squares, parks, streets and the Internet are all potential public spaces that are activated through participation and engagement in order to a cquire meaning. The multiple interconnected spaces within which we act have redefined and affected our perception of everyday life as well as our social and cultural imaginaries. On the other hand, real-time data circulation and information exchange have created new patterns of communication allowing communities to surpass their localities and explore new modes of engagement and collaboration. However, inhabiting at the same time a plethora of spaces that are potentially public the question that arises is: how open and free are these spaces? Have the visions regarding open access to public space and eventually public data been fulfilled? Through […]

11. Märcall: FLEFF 2015 >>Call for entries : 1 May 2015 Iterations As Habitats The 18th annual Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) will begin its yearlong exploration of the theme of Habitats with concerts, workshops, master classes, performances, and films. FLEFF invites submissions of digital media projects designed to run online or on mobile devices for its online exhibition “Iterations as Habitats” of USD250. We speak of habitats in terms of environments inhabited by human and nonhuman animals, plants, insects, minerals, fungi, bacteria; terrains, waters, and atmospheres, spanning the local, havens, dwellings, abodes, sites. While habitats often imply stability, sustenance, and a natural order, their dynamics are also understood in terms of conflicts and contradictions. As competing organisms and species vie for niches, a habitat’s appearance of coherence can be illusory, disguising violence. Habitats move from environments to the planet, as climate change and species extinction are considered in terms of the An thropocene; habitats move from physical to virtual places, as artificial intelligence is understood as an actant or agent. In mathematics and computational sciences, “iterations” are repetitions of functions, statements, applications, software, or hardware that include minor mutations, thereby working successively and incrementally closer to solutions of problems. They can be recursive or fractal, self-similar or mirrored, not unlike patterns in nature. Simulations become environments for artificial life, much like physical environments for synthetic life. From the vantage of environmentalism, notions of improvement and progress, however, demand critical evaluation, particularly in terms of modelling for genetically modified organisms, neoliberal economic policies, and “democratic” elections; at the […]

22. Febcall: Sounds, Images And Data (Sid) >>Call for entries : 20 March 2015 CALL FOR PAPERS: Sounds, Images And Data (Sid) Sounds, Images and Data 2015 is a conference that analyzes the role of the artists and curators in creating new experiences and aesthetics in the 21st century. By mixing a series of contemporary technologies, social media practices and innovative approaches both to curating and artistic practices, contemporary creators and commentators are envisaging and constructing a different world where different strands collide. These practices could be defined as convergent, but they actually bring a complexity to the field of studies that cannot be subsumed under an homologating system, rather it appears to produce multiple and sometimes contradictory aesthetics. The conference will analyze the following themes, but will be open to a wide range of proposals in the field that tackle the issues from a variety of perspectives. Curating Sounds, Images and Data Artistic Practices in Sounds, Images and Data Theories of Sounds, Images and Data Aesthetics of So unds, Images and Data Convergence or Divergence? Experimental Practices of Sounds, Images and Data Sounds, Images and Data in Relation to Traditional Practices The conference is a collaboration between New York University, Steinhardt School and Goldsmiths, University of London. Chairs: Lanfranco Aceti and Tae Hong Park. More information on: 300 to 500 words abstract submissions. Please send your submissions to: Email Subject Header: SID 2015 : March 20, 2015.
